When most people think of Los Angeles they think of lights, movies, and everything else that comes with an urban setting. While this is true with all of our studios and famous hotels around the city, people often forget that just steps away from (and even within) the city we have great spots to enjoy the outdoors. No, we’re not talking poolside or even the beaches. Think forests, hiking trails, lakes, and even a great spot for a quick swim and mini cliff dive in the afternoon.
One of these great spots is just outside of the city at Malibu Creek State Park. You’ll forget you are in a coastal state and slip into a peaceful setting perfect for an afternoon hike. The park has several trails, most shaded by trees and surrounded by nothing but blue skies and mountains. You can hike to a lake for a swim, or even the “rock pond” that has a great spot if you are in for a little “cliff diving.” We say cliff diving lightly as it is more like a low diving board – but still a great adventure for anyone to hike to and cool off with a quick dip! We do recommend some sandals you don’t mind getting wet or water shoes if you hop in. Lake water isn’t as clear as the ocean and you don’t want to cut your foot on a rock! If you are unsure of how to get around, the rangers are great at helping direct you to the best trails, and the state park has a visitor center that will give you the history of area, and also help you find your way through all of the trails.
Entrance to the park is free, but you do have to pay a fee for parking. The fee is minimal at just 2 dollars per hour and makes for a great day without a dent to the wallet. Bring a cooler and pack a picnic lunch for the perfect afternoon. Definitely don’t forget extra water, sunscreen, a towel (for the adventurous swimmers out there), and good walking shoes. While you’re at it, bring a hat – it is sunny California after all!
